Detroit Tigers 2020 Season Preview

Fantasy Baseball

Strange things can happen in small sample sizes right? The 2020 MLB season will be played under a 60 day schedule. If the Detroit Tigers can get off to a hot start – they will find themselves in the Playoff hunt! However, let’s take a look at the reality of the Detroit Tigers.

The Detroit Tigers swept a double header against the Boston Red Sox on the 23rd of April 2019. They would open the 2019 MLB season with a 12-10 record! The glory was short lived as the Tigers would only win 35 time in the following 140 games. Not only did the team loose consistently, they would be beaten by an average of 2.5 runs in each loss. Since April 23, 2019 every other MLB team has won a minimum of 10 more games than Detroit. In an effort to put the pathetic nature of the Detroit Tigers into perspective – their 140-game stretch is the worst stretch by any team this century:

  1. 2019 Tigers: 35-105 (.250 winning percentage)
  2. 2003 Tigers: 37-103 (.264 winning percentage)
  3. 2018 Orioles: 39-101 (.279 winning percentage)
  4. 2004 Diamondbacks: 40-100 (.286 winning percentage)
  5. 2012 Astros: 43-97 (.307 winning percentage)

The MLB season starts next week and the new team and short season is cause for optimism! Let’s take a look at what this team can look like.

Detroit Tigers OVER 21.5 games

The good news from 2019’s 47-114 record is that it gave the Detroit Tigers the No. 1 selection in this year’s amateur draft. They were able to select Arizona State slugger, Spencer Torkelson. We will be following Spencer and the rest of the baby Tigers via the Tiger Minor League Report. These guys do an excellent job covering the guys looking to make their way onto the big league roster.

In addition to the 1st round draft pick, we feel the Tigers have improved! They will also be confined to playing just the Central division. No games vs teams like the Yankees. We are going with the OVER 21.5 games as an under the radar pick.
