It took longer than we expected but the NBA Playoffs are finally here! And perhaps the first round match-up fans will have their eyes on most is the Dallas Mavericks against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers are one of the three favorites to win the NBA Finals because of their ridiculous depth while the Mavericks have turned their franchise around faster than expected due to the rise of phenom, Luka Doncic. The Clippers are heavy favorites to win the series but it won’t be as easy as odds-makers are making it seem.
Mavericks
No one expected Luka Doncic to become one of the top players in the NBA in just his sophomore season but he did. Luka led the league in triple doubles this season while averaging 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game. In 3 games against the Clippers this season, he averaged 29 points each game. Doncic has to know that if the Mavs want to have a shot at upsetting the Clippers, he needs to play like a superstar. That’s why I see him averaging over 30 points a game this series. He wants to cement his status as one of the best players in the game and what better way to do it than against this stacked Clippers team.
Clippers
After acquiring superstars, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, in the the offseason, the Clippers became a big favorite to win the NBA Championship this year. They already had a playoff team before the transactions but in adding Leonard and George, they became perhaps the best team in basketball on paper. George has taken a little bit of a backseat to Kawhi this season and it’s understandable. Kawhi has won championships before so he knows what it takes to get there and win. Leonard averaged over 27 points a game during the regular season but had even greater success against the Mavericks. He averaged 31 points a game against Dallas this year and he should and will probably do the same in this series. Kawhi loves the pressure of the playoffs and almost always delivers.
