New York Rangers Vs Carolina Hurricanes Game Day Preview
The storyline heading into game 1 is who will the New York Rangers & Carolina Hurricanes name as their starting goalies? For the Rangers, will it be Igor Shesterkin or Henrik Lundqvist? In terms of the Hurricanes, will it be James Reimer or Petr Mrazek?
Rangers rookie sensation, Igor Shesterkin, provided a big jolt to the team late in the regular season. He made 12 starts and posting a .931 ESSV% vs. Lundqvist’s .917. Reimer (24 starts) didn’t play as much as Mrazek (38 starts), but he did post the better even strength save percentage (.920 vs. .912). However, for the playoffs – how much will David Quinn and Rod Brind’Amour weigh regular season success against experience?
This could be Lundqvist’s last run with the Rangers! Also, let’s not forget how it was Mrazek who marched the Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference Final a year ago.
New York Rangers
The Rangers’ dynamic duo of Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad were unstoppable during the regular season. The two were able to combine for 40 even strength goals during the regular season. A healthy Chris Kreider also returns to the lineup and needs to provide secondary scoring if the Rangers are to advance. With that said, this is the Playoffs! Past leaders like Mats Zuccarello (Click HERE for the very best Minnesota Wild Coverage) have been replaced with up and coming players like Pavel Buchnevich, Kaapo Kakko & Filip Chytil. These players are making their NHL playoff debut. Let’s see how the respond to the increased intensity.
Carolina Hurricanes
At the NHL trade deadline, the Hurricanes beefed up by adding to their defense unit with former Ranger, Brady Skjei, and Sami Vatanen. They also got Vincent Trocheck that will play up front. Factor in how Justin Williams returned in January and there is now enough balance up front for Carolina to make a run. This team has talent and move the puck well leading to a lot of good scoring opportunities.
