The DC Defenders continued their reign of dominance over the XFL East with a 27-0 blowout victory over the New York Guardians last Saturday afternoon. Defenders QB, Cardale Jones continued his highlight reel by completing 23 of 37 attempts for 276 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. The DC offensive line as a whole also did their job by giving Jones the opportunities to make his plays and allowing for 108 rushing yards. This will be the Defenders first away game however, so it will be interesting to see how they perform when they aren’t at home.
The real dominate performance for DC last week however was on the defensive side of the ball. After completing only 8 of 19 pass attempts with 2 interceptions, New York QB Matt McGloin got benched. This led to a very awkward interview of McGloin complaining about coaching choices. NY Head coach Kevin Gilbride mentioned, “I need to go talk to him & figure out what the problem is because he needs to play better.” If the DC Defenders are able to continue that level of defensive pressure, the Wildcats will surely struggle to turnaround their tough season.
Los Angeles Wildcats
The Los Angeles Wildcats have had a rough start to their inaugural XFL season, to say the least, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t shown signs of life. Although the Wildcats got dominated 37-17 in week one against the powerful Houston Roughnecks, they appeared more competitive in their game last week against the Dallas Renegades. The decision to fire defensive coordinator Pepper Johnson after only one game initially appeared to be the right decision as they held Dallas to only three points after three quarters.
Although it was a slow start for LA QB Josh Johnson, he showed signs of life in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, turnovers ended up costing the Wildcats a 25-18 loss to the Renegades. After having a full week of practice with the starting unit however, Johnson should be expected to have a better performance. The real threat the Wildcats offer is in WR Nelson Spruce, the XFL’s leading pass catcher. Over the first two weeks of play, Spruce has caught 17 passes for 192 yards. Los Angeles will need to figure out their remaining issues running the ball however if they want to pose any chance of maintaining the clock against the seamlessly flawless DC QB Cardale Jones.
