Clemson has been playing with a chip on their shoulder all season as they have felt disrespected by their rankings, regardless of being 15-0 over the past two seasons as well as the reigning national champions. By upsetting the No. 2 seed Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl, Clemson has proved their defensive strength. Clemson’s defense ranks first in the nation in points allowed (11.5) and also against the pass (151.5 yards). They have also managed to allow the fewest first downs (189) as well as topping the country in pass efficiency defense (96.3). Overall, they rank second in total defense (264.1 yards). Unfortunately for LSU, Clemson is also equally as dangerous on the other side of the ball.
Clemson ranks third in total offense (538.4 yards) and only needs 31 points to break the school record of 664, which was set last season. QB Trevor Lawrence has accounted for 3,431 yards and ranks 5th with 36 TDs. Although the LSU defense has been tremendous all season, they will be put to the test against Clemson RB Travis Etienne, who has earned 22 touchdowns this season. This makes him the first player in program history to account for 20 in multiple campaigns after scoring 26 in 2018.
LSU has undoubtedly earned their position as the No. 1 seed in the college football championship by defeated an astounding six top-10 teams this season, as well as a majority of their victories by double digits. They will truly have their hands full against the Clemson defense however, as we should expect a very exciting matchup featuring the No. 2 passing offense against the No. 1 pass defense. Clemson’s level of high-powered competition however has been questionable compared to what LSU has faced all season. LSU’s deep crop of receivers will be the most dangerous Clemson has faced all year and their 5-wide package is arguably the best in the country.
2019 Heisman Trophy winner and LSU QB Joe Burrow has had an exceptional season, to say the least. He leads the nation in TDs with 55 and ranks 2nd in yards with 5,208. In the dominating victory Oklahoma, he threw 493 yards for 7 TDs. The stout Clemson pass defense will be truly tested against Burrow’s arm as he targets WR Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. Chase has earned 1,559 yards with 75 REC and 18 TD’s this season while Jefferson boasts 1,434 yards with 102 REC and also 18 TD’s. LSU has gone 25 consecutive quarters without trailing and has not been behind in the fourth quarter once this entire season.
