This Week In Wrestling

Compared to recent weeks, this week in the wrestling world was not as newsworthy. Besides Smackdown, the other shows all built towards their next big events. Raw continues to be lag behind the other shows as it is too long and not intriguing enough to fill a three hour time slot. AEW Dynamite and WWE Smackdown however delivered good shows this week.

Due to the limitations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the flaws are starting to show in WWE. By failing to build multiple new talents up, they are struggling to provide consistently good television every week, especially on Raw. Smackdown has been great recently as different players have started to step up but Raw is lacking the talent to keep its audience engaged. Superstars are appearing in multiple segments each week on Raw so stories that would normally take weeks happen in one night. Hopefully this causes WWE to realize they cannot continue to run their business this way once things go back to normal.

WWE Raw – Monday June 1, 2020

Even though Raw has been lacking excitement lately, there are a few superstars who have been thriving lately. Seth Rollins and Aleister Black put on a great wrestling match to kick off the show this week. Black winning was the right move as he needs to continue his momentum if they want him to the big star everyone knows he can become. Charlotte versus Asuka was ruined by interference from Nia Jax, Asuka’s opponent at the upcoming Backlash pay per view. The show ended with Lashley finally getting the upper hand on Drew McIntyre ahead of their WWE Championship next Sunday. Hopefully the rumored influx of NXT talent to Raw will help get some of its audience back after several mediocre shows.

All Elite Wrestling Dynamite – Wednesday June 3, 2020

The TNT Championship was defended for the first time ever on Dynamite this week. Cody and Jungle Boy had a very physical match that exceeded expectations. Jungle Boy might have lost but came out of that match as a bigger star due to his valiant effort. The AEW Tag Team Championship was also on the line this week as Kenny Omega & Hangman Page successfully defended the titles against Kip Sabian & Jimmy Havoc. No one expected the champs to lose here but it was still a good match. The big news coming out of Dynamite was that this year’s Fyter Fest event will take place over two episodes of Dynamite. The dates for Fyter Fest are July 1st and July 8th. The main event will be AEW Champion, Jon Moxley, versus Brian Cage for the title.

WWE Smackdown – Friday June 5, 2020

Bayley and Sasha Banks are the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions! This makes absolute sense as it boosts the Bayley/Sasha storyline and now both women can appear on all WWE shows. It was announced that the finals of the Intercontinental Championship tournament will take place on the next Smackdown. The competitors in the match, AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan, delivered a great segment explaining why they should be the next champion. That is going to be a phenomenal match, no pun intended. Braun Strowman was terrorized by Miz and Morrison ahead of their title match at Backlash on this show as well. However, Strowman got the last laugh after tipping over their surveillance truck. Also on Smackdown, Jeff Hardy outed Sheamus as the man behind the attacks last week on him and Elias. They will now face each other at Backlash.
