NXT Takeover: In Your House Match Card Preview
It’s the best of both worlds as NXT brings us another Takeover event while adopting a wildly popular old-school WWE pay per view moniker. In Your House was the name of the then WWF pay per views that would take place in between the big four shows of the year. Since we are still in the quarantine era and fans cannot attend shows, the In Your House name fits this Takeover perfectly.
NXT has been the most consistently great wrestling brand since its first Takeover in 2014. There have been close to 30 Takeover events and not one has been less than great. The Takeover: In Your House card looks stellar with each match having the potential to be match of the night. NXT’s 3 biggest singles titles will be on the line on this night.
NXT Championship Backlot Brawl Match – Adam Cole vs Velveteen Dream
Adam Cole is longest reigning NXT Champion in history. He has held the title for over a year and has delivered on every big stage he has been put on. Some people make not like him due to his smaller stature but Adam Cole IS the total package. He’s got the passion, the mic skills, the in-ring psychology, the move-set. Besides the build, you name it, Adam Cole has it. Which might mean it’s time for Cole to drop the title and move to Raw or Smackdown.
Velveteen Dream is one of the most popular superstars in NXT history. His flamboyant nature is a hit with fans due to it being something we haven’t seen in years. He has been feuding with Adam Cole and the rest of the Undisputed Era for months now. He might’ve won the title if not for a major back injury he sustained last year. It might be his time to hold the main strap on NXT.
The added stipulation of the match being a Backlot Brawl has fans intrigued. What will this match look like? Will it be another cinematic match that have thrilled fans in this quarantine era? Regardless of the match type, these two men will put on a great show that will have viewers of the edge of their seat. Expect this to be the longest match on the show with the loser moving to Raw or Smackdown sometime soon.
NXT Championship Triple Threat Match – Charlotte vs Rhea Ripley vs Io Shirai
Ever since the days of Charlotte versus Natayla and Sasha Bank vs Bayley, the women of NXT have put on phenomenal matches at these Takeover events. The triple threat match for the NXT Women’s Championship has the components to potentially rank right up there with the best. Charlotte, Rhea Ripley, and Io Shirai are 3 of the top WRESTLERS in the world. That’s talking men and women.
Since winning beating Rhea Ripley for the title at Wrestlemania, Charlotte has become the workhorse of WWE. She has wrestled on all 3 brands and been perhaps the biggest star in WWE these past 3 months. But I think it’s time for her to use her GOAT status to create another big star by dropping the title to Ripley or Shirai.
The best route for NXT to go is to have Io Shirai win this match. She would become the top heel in the NXT Women’s division and the chase of Ripley trying to get the NXT Women’s Championship would be a great story. Also at some point, Charlotte and Ripley will have their Wrestlemania rematch and that match does not need a title to be big time. This is another match that will get time to breath and let the women showcase how great they are.
NXT North American Championship Match – Keith Lee vs Johnny Gargano
If any superstar had a calendar year as good as Adam Cole, it was Keith Lee. He put his name on the map in a big way by competing against the biggest stars in all of WWE. He went toe to toe with Adam Cole, Roman Reigns, and even Brock Lesnar and looked like a HUGE star while sharing the ring with them. I heavily believe Keith Lee is the next big wrestling star due to his size, promo skills, and in ring work. The man has it all. But at Takeover: In Your House, he faces the man who has competed in more Takeover matches than any other superstar in history.
Johnny Gargano is the embodiment of the NXT brand and Takeover has always been a night he showcases why he is one of the best in the world. He has delivered match of the year contenders on several Takeovers while also winning championship goal on numerous occasions at these same shows. Gargano has had a character change lately and is now a full blown heel. It’s this dynamic that is going to pair great with the hot babyface Lee and will deliver a Takeover classic.
This match card shows why NXT is so great because this is another match that can go either way. Gargano should defeat Lee so Lee can move onto the main title in NXT where he belongs. This could also be another case where if Lee loses, he will be moved to Raw or Smackdown as WWE continues its transition phase. Don’t be surprised by some outside interference as both men’s significant others have been heavily involved in this story.
Singles Match – Tommaso Ciampa vs Karrion Kross
Karrion Kross debuted several weeks ago and it was a debut that had the whole wrestling world talking. His entrance alongside Scarlett Bordeaux instantly became the best in all of WWE because of how unique it is. His in-ring physicality is so menacing that you believe he is inflicting real punishment on his opponents. Kross decided to make his mark on his first night by attacking former NXT Champion and standard bearer, Tommaso Ciampa.
If anyone on the NXT roster can be as menacing as Kross, it’s Ciampa. Ciampa has had some of the most vicious matches anyone has seen in years on the Takeover events. He’s one of the best wrestlers in NXT history and he’s made it known to Kross that it was mistake going after him first.
This might be the biggest match on the card due to its long lasting effects. Karrion Kross looks like the next face of NXT and he can prove that by stealing the show with the former face of NXT, Ciampa. Despite it not having a title involved, it is the most anticipated match on the card because fans want to see where it goes. The outcome of this match will determine where NXT goes in the future. Is the rocket strapped to Kross? We will find out on Sunday.
