WWE Smackdown 6/5 Show Preview
Last week’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown went completely off the rails. After Elias was apparently run over by Jeff Hardy at the beginning of the show, both semi-final matches of the Intercontinental Championship tournament were cancelled. AJ Styles advanced to the finals by forfeit while Daniel Bryan defeated Sheamus to earn his finals spot.
This week’s edition looks to be a little more stable. The Women’s Tag Team Championships will be on line when Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross defend them against Smackdown Women’s Champion Bayley and Sasha Banks. The Miz and John Morrison will confront Universal Champion Braun Strowman less than 10 days before they challenge him for the title. Also on this show, Jeff Hardy will address what happened in the chaotic opening to last week’s show. Finally, AJ Styles and Daniel will talk face to face ahead of their Intercontinental Championship match on next week’s Smackdown.
Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross vs. Bayley & Sasha Banks For the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship
Bayley & Sasha Banks were the first ever WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. And ever since they lost them at last year’s Wrestlemania, they have always wanted another shot at holding the titles together. They get their wish as they face the current champions, Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross, on this edition of Smackdown. Bliss & Cross won the tag titles at Wrestlemania this year and have successfully defended them on more than one occasion.
However, WWE programming could use a little jolt and Bayley & Banks winning the tag titles could provide that. By winning the Women’s Tag Team Championship, Bayley & Sasha Banks would be able to appear on any of WWE’s 3 weekly shows and that could provide the ratings bump WWE needs. The two women are very entertaining and have been at the top of the women’s division since debuting on the main roster.
What’s great about this match is that it can go either way and that’s when WWE programming is at its best. This is the only match being heavily featured for Smackdown this week so it should be given an ample amount of time. With this match taking place so close to the Backlash pay per view, expect a rematch at that show regardless of the outcome of this match.
Miz & Morrison Have Some Words For Braun Strowman
Ever since reuniting as a team, The Miz & John Morrison have been one of the most entertaining acts in all of WWE. The two mesh so well together that whenever they are on screen, they are must-see. In fact, the two are so great together that they are getting the very rare opportunity to compete against the Universal Champion, Braun Strowman, in a two-on-one handicap match for the title at Backlash.
Handicap matches for main singles titles in WWE rarely happen. But Miz & Morrison have been on their A game and have separated themselves from the singles stars on Smackdown. On this week’s show, they will address Strowman ahead of their match in less than two weeks. These two always have something “smart” to say and they might want to tread carefully as Strowman will be listening close by and will be ready to pounce on them if they go too far.
