If this match-up would have been scheduled a month earlier, it would have been touted as an NBA Finals preview. Fast forward to today and the Milwaukee Bucks remain, more or less, who they were a month ago, but the Lakers do not. They will suit up against the Eastern Conference powerhouse Bucks without LeBron James or Anthony Davis. They will get to kick the tires on their new starting center however, Andre Drummond. The shine is definitely off when you consider what this game might have been if both teams were healthy, but it still promises to be, well, a game.
Milwaukee Bucks
What make shock you if you don’t follow the Bucks, or if you just read that intro paragraph before this one, the Bucks are on a losing streak. One team will come into this game having won two games in a row. That team is not the mostly healthy Bucks. The will face the Lakers having lost three in a row. They suffered through a five game losing streak earlier this season and no doubt will want to stop the bleeding against the Lakers.
The Bucks are led by two time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. And I do mean led in every possible way you can define that word. He has been their top scorer in 85% of their games. He has led them in rebounds in 72% of their games and assists in 53%. The franchise has done a good job building a nice group around him including P.J. Tucker and now Jeff Teague. Neither of those two new Bucks will see action against the Lakers however.
Los Angeles Lakers
As previously mentioned, the Lakers are on a modest two game winning streak. Those wins came against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic. Not exactly powerhouse teams right now, but without AD and LeBron, neither are the Lakers. Expect the Lakers to let Andre Drummond have as much time on the court as he can handle. They need to acclimate him to his new teammates and help him get his game legs back.
The bulk of the scoring load has fallen on Montrezl Harrell with the Lakers two stars out. Which, is something to keep an eye on in this game. Trezz is not a jump shooter. He gets his points under the rim thanks to rim runs, getting tough rebounds, and generally out-muscling the competition. In a very real way, that is the type of game Andre Drummond plays. Will Coach Vogel play those two together? Can those two play together? When you consider that Harrell and Drummond will likely be the primary scorers for the Lakers for a while, that is a dilemma that has to be sorted out.
