A battle of two powerhouse, skilled players will be on display on Saturday night on ABC. On Thursday night was Anthony Davis big return from a calf and achilles injury that made him miss 30+ games. A week after he was cleared from injury he made his return in limited fashion.
This is the second game of a back-to-back in Dallas. On Thursday night Dallas won 115-110 led by Doncic 30 points. These two teams were supposed to be atop the Western conference, but with injuries to Lakers top players and Dallas not having chemistry, not taking the next step. Luka Doncic had led the way and has had his all-star performance were all used to.
This should be one of many the wildest matchups that we want toes in the playoffs between LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Luka Doncic.
Los Angeles Lakers
The defending NBA champions are having a different year than everyone would expect. With the shortest offseason for any champion in any season, you knew injuries were going to happen.
Anthony Davis made his return to the court for the first time since February 14 with a calf and achilles injury, while LeBron James is still out with a high ankle sprain. He should be returning in the next couple weeks before the playoffs.
The role players of Los Angeles have kept them afloat and no in the play in round. Lakers are the 5th seed in Western conference, but are only up 2.5 games on falling back into the play in round.
During this rough Lakers stretch they have been led by Dennis Schroder with 15.6 points a game and Kyle Kuzma with 12.6 points a game. Both have taken a big step to keep this team in the right position for Davis to return.
Dennis Schroder on playoff seeding, “I mean, first off, it don’t matter where we end up at. I think for me personally, if everybody is there in a 7 game series, I’ll put my money on us.”
Dallas Mavericks
Dallas was supposed to take that next step after that tough first round series with the Clippers, but the Mavericks have be inconsistent all year long. Right now Dallas sits in 7th spot in the play in round.
Mavs are tied with Portland for 6th spot, but Portland has tiebreaker so if season ended today Portland would get in regular playoffs, while Mavs be in the play in round.
Luka Doncic keeps getting better and better, but the people around him are too inconsistent. Luka is averaging 28.7 points, 8.7 assists and 8.0 rebounds a game. Those are MVP numbers in any year, but with the way some of these players are playing he’s not talked about in that conversation.
When Kristaps Porzingis plays he is very good averaging 20.4 points and 9.3 rebounds a game, but he has only played in 39 games. He just got hurt again on Thursday with an ankle sprain, his return is uncertain.
Rick Carlisle on Porzingis injury, “He is uncertain for Saturday. He is walking. He’s not in a boot or anything.”
