WWE Summerslam 8/23 Show Preview
WWE Summerslam is WWE’s second biggest show of the year behind Wrestlemania and this year’s edition will be the most unique ever as it will be the first big event to take place in the new WWE ThunderDome. The ThunderDome made it’s debut on Smackdown Friday night and gave the show a much needed upgrade from the WWE Performance Center. A bunch of big storylines will come to a head at Summerslam and WWE has been promoting the show with the tagline “You Will Never See It Coming.” What that means no one knows for sure but definitely has fans buzzing.
The Raw side of the Summerslam card is headlined by the WWE Championship match between Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton. Raw Women’s Champion, Sasha Banks, will defend her title against former champion, Asuka. Apollo Crews will defend his United States Championship against MVP. The Raw Tag Team Championship will also be defended when the Street Profits look to even the score with Andrade & Angel Garza. The Raw portion of the card also includes the hue grudge match between Seth Rollins and Dominik Mysterio in what will be be Dominik’s debut match.
The Smackdown side of things in headlined by the Universal Championship match between Braun Strowman and “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt. Smackdown Women’s Champion, Bayley, will also be defending her championship against Asuka. And lastly, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville will battle in a Loser Leaves WWE match.
Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton – WWE Championship Match
Two of the best male superstars in WWE today go one on one for the WWE Championship when champion, Drew McIntyre, faces Randy Orton. Both men are having career years and have doing their best to get WWE through these rough times. This will be McIntyre’s biggest test since defeating Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania for the title. Randy Orton has been in the business for almost 20 years and it’s remarkable for such a storied career, he has never been better than he is right now.
This is another one of those matches I love because you can make a serious case for either man winning. This should be a hard hitting match that gets an ample amount of time and besides maybe a DQ finish, any outcome this match has will probably be well-received by fans. But with ratings down and WWE known for going back to ESTABLISHED stars instead of building NEW ones, I see Randy Orton walking out of Summerslam the new WWE Champion.
Braun Strowman vs. The Fiend – Universal Championship Match
I’ve said it time and time again, Bray Wyatt/The Fiend is the best character in WWE and after his match with Braun Strowman, he should once again be the Universal Champion. No one in the WWE is more OVER than Bray Wyatt and he’s the man you build a show around, not Braun Strowman. WWE pulled the trigger on a Strowman championship run ONLY after Roman Reigns dropped out of his match Goldberg at Wrestlemania. Braun Strowman was a replacement and a placeholder. His time to be pushed to the top was two years ago and WWE did not take advantage of it. It’s Bray Wyatt’s world now and it’s about time he sits at the top of Smackdown again.
What WWE should do here is a double-turn with Wyatt/Fiend and Strowman. The fans clearly love Wyatt/Fiend regardless of what he does and seem to be over Strowman. We have seen some hints that this is route WWE will go but nothing is ever a given with them. Expect Alexa Bliss to have some involvement here as she has be a supporting character in recent weeks in this chaotic story. With the Falls Count Anywhere stipulation now being added, this match will be pure insanity and should be one of the longer matches of Wyatt and Strowman’s careers.
