WWE Smackdown 6/12 Show Preview
It’s the final Smackdown before the Backlash pay-per-view on Sunday and normally the big stories on pre-pay-per-view show are about the storylines heading into said show. But not this week. The big focus of this week’s episode of Smackdown is the finals of the Intercontinental Championship Tournament. It will be AJ Styles versus Daniel Bryan for the title.
Universal Champion Braun Strowman will be able to get his hands on his Backlash opponents early when he teams with Heavy Machinery against Miz & Morrison and their partner for the night, Dolph Ziggler. Also on this episode, Jeff Hardy and Sheamus will talk face to face just days from their grudge match at Sunday’s event.
AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan For The WWE Intercontinental Championship
AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan are two of the most decorated wrestlers of this generation. They are universally beloved by the wrestling community and their peers. When the Intercontinental Championship Tournament bracket was originally released, many fans assumed and hoped that these two would meet in the finals. And we got our wish.
Styles and Bryan have wrestled great matches against one another in past with some of those matches being for the WWE Championship. This time, they wrestle for the IC Championship with each hoping to win the title and elevating it to a status it hasn’t seen in years. The Intercontinental Championship USED to be one of the most prestigious titles in the entire wrestling business but in recent years has been relegated to boring feuds and mid-card superstars.
Styles and Bryan are bonafide main-eventers so either them winning this match is good for not only the title itself but the Smackdown brand. Quite honestly, either them as Intercontinental Champion makes it the most important title on Smackdown as Braun Strowman’s Universal Championship reign has been uneventful and he is not on the level of a AJ Styles or Daniel Bryan. This will undoubtedly be the match of the night and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are given 15-20 minutes to tell their story.
Braun Strowman & Heavy Machinery vs. Dolph Ziggler & Miz & Morrison
Universal Champion Braun Strowman will team with Heavy Machinery to face Miz & Morrison plus Dolph Ziggler just days before Strowman defends his title against both Miz & Morrison in a handicap match. This match has plenty of grudges and storylines built into it but for some reason does not feel important.
Strowman hasn’t been interesting since he stopped feuding with Bray Wyatt. Since winning the Money In The Bank contract, Otis hasn’t really done much to prove he can be a credible champion in the future. Dolph Ziggler is same old Dolph Ziggler. Miz & Morrison are always entertaining but no one sees them as credible threats to Strowman’s reign even though it would be a nice change on Smackdown.
These men are supposed to be some of Smackdown’s top stars and yet they feel like mid-card wrestlers. Hopefully coming out of Backlash Smackdown will change gears and start building some credible stars. I know it’s hard in the crowd-less arena era to make new stars. But there has to be a reason WWE’s competition is not having these same problems. Smackdown needs to change after Backlash and maybe the Styles-Bryan match will be the change Smackdown desperately needs.
