WWE Smackdown 7/3 Show Preview

WWE Smackdown got turned on its head last week after multiple WWE superstars and employees tested positive for COVID-19. Due to the overwhelming positive tests and further testing required, the original plan for Smackdown was scrapped. The show then became a tribute event to the Undertaker. Besides the Bray Wyatt/Braun Strowman promo segment, none of the advertised segments or matches took place.

This week 3 segments are being advertised for Smackdown. The Intercontinental Championship match between AJ Styles and Drew Gulak that was supposed to occur last week is now scheduled for this episode. Another segment that was supposed to happen last week that will happen on this edition is Sheamus’ “toast” to Jeff Hardy. Finally, new Smackdown superstar, Matt Riddle, will be interviewed by Michael Cole.

Matt Riddle Speaks!

Matt Riddle debuted on Smackdown with a bang two weeks ago. Riddle defeated Intercontinental Champion, AJ Styles, in his first match on the blue brand. Riddle was one of the top superstars on NXT and is a big fan favorite in the wrestling community. He has an MMA background and was a rising star in the UFC until Dana White fired him for his use of marijuana. After a couple of more MMA fights, Riddle jumped into the professional wrestling world and quickly excelled. His debut match in NXT at the end of 2018, which he quickly won, was highly anticipated. He has been a part of NXT’s growing success the past two years.

Now, as a member of the Smackdown roster, Riddle is ready to show his talents to a bigger audience. Due to his unique character, his interview with Michael Cole will be a highlight of Smackdown this week. It should also set up his first feud on the main roster.

AJ Styles vs. Drew Gulak For The WWE Intercontinental Championship

AJ Styles has always referred to Smackdown as “The House That AJ Styles Built” due to his impressive run on the show a couple of years back. Now that he is back on the blue brand, he is looking to surpass that run and for the third time in four weeks, he will be in action. He won the Intercontinental Championship three weeks ago by defeating Daniel Bryan in one of the best matches on 2020. Two weeks ago, he put on a show with the debuting Matt Riddle but ultimately lost the match. This week, he defends the IC Title against Drew Gulak.

Since joining forces with Daniel Bryan, Drew Gulak has been featured more frequently on Smackdown which he certainly deserves. He has always been great in the ring but recently has shown he is pretty good on the mic as well. With this two great in-ring technicians going at it Friday night, I expect AJ Styles to continue his streak of excellent matches. Gulak will probably lose this match but, like many of other men who have lost to Styles, come out of it the better due to Styles’ star power.
