Washington Capitals Vs New York Rangers Game Day Preview
In the second game of the back-to-back between Washington and New York, Capitals won on Monday night 6-3. Washington with that win has now tied Pittsburgh for the division lead with a game in hand on Pittsburgh. While the Rangers chance to compete for playoffs have ended, but New York got eliminated from playoffs with their loss on Monday night. The Rangers are the youngest team in NHL.
A big problem on Monday nights game was the actions of Tom Wilson sucker punching Pavel Buchnevich, than throwing Panarin down to the ice by pulling his hair to the ice. Not a good look for Wilson. Look for an suspension or a fine coming in the next couple days from the NHL.
Washington one of the best offensive teams for almost 10 years now. That has been carrying them all these years, but to win the cup and all these playoff games the defense has always been there.
Capitals are in the toughest division in hockey, while leading the division with a week or so remaining. Capitals are playing without their best player Alex Ovechkin last couple games. He tried to come back Monday night, but only played four minutes before leaving cause of injury.
For the first time in a while Washington is led in points by someone not named Ovechkin. Nicklas Backstrom leads in points with 51 points with 14 goals and 37 assists. Ovechkin has 42 points with 24 goals and 18 assists in only 43 out of 52 games.
The big question mark going into playoffs is who is going to be the goalie. Playing two goalies all year, but Vitek Vanecek has played 33 games to Ilya Samsonov 19 games. Vanecek is 18-9-4 with 2.75 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. While Samsonov is 13-4-1 with a 2.69 goals against average and .902 save percentage. Both deserve to play, but will go with the hot hand.
Garnet Hathaway after Mondays win, “Guys stepped up tonight. They relied on a lot of guys next to us step up. It was a big effort win for us, character win, and it’s just the guys in the room that just came together.”
New York Rangers
The Rangers are the youngest team in NHL, and they had some games like it this season. A team that can score with the best of them had some games where they didn’t show up and played like a young team.
New York is ranked 10th in the NHL in goals per game, while they are 9th in NHL in goals given up. With those two numbers in top 10 they should at least be in the playoffs, but with the big mistakes and injuries they have had this year they are not.
Artemi Panarin Leads New York in scoring by a wide margin, even though he has only played 41 out of 53 games. Missing 12 games due to a leave of absence because of an issue in his home country of Russia. Panarin has 17 goals , 39 assists for 56 points.
Being led in goal by Igor Shesterkin playing in 32 of 53 games, while backups Alexandar Georgiev and Keith Kinkaid played the rest. Igor is 15-12-3 with a 2.44 goals against average and .920 save percentage.
Mika Zibanejad Rangers season, “Still three games to to play. It’s going to be a good challenge every night, and we want to end on a high note.”
