Get excited hockey fans! The NHL has announced that the puck will drop on August 1st! The Carolina Hurricanes Vs New York Rangers matchup should be very intriguing. This would be the first exposure to post season hockey the Rangers have had since 2017. The Hurricanes will look to build on what was a tremendous 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs having advanced to the Eastern Conference.
Carolina Hurricanes Key Factor
The Carolina Hurricanes are a strongly built team that leverages a strong two-way game. They have a very deep roster touting one of the best defense corps in the NHL, which includes former Ranger Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce, and Dougie Hamilton. Their top forwards include their leading scorer Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, as well as Teuvo Terovainen. A concern for Carolina would be their goaltending. They have battled inconsistencies and injuries throughout the season. The Canes have a good chance to win this series if their defense can play to their best, their top forwards can find a way to solve Ranger goaltending, and if either Mrazek or Reimer can get hot during the course of the series.
New York Rangers Key Factors
The New York Rangers were inconsistent at the beginning of the season, but became one of the hottest teams before the stoppage caused by the COVID 19 Pandemic. The Rangers biggest advantage is their goaltending. A three goalie situation in New York isn’t ideal, however, the Rangers should feel confident with whichever goalie they start.
The team also features forwards like Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad. Both of these stars are coming off of career years.
The Blueshirts enter this series with a few disadvantages. One of those is that is they are young and inexperienced team. They will need leadership from veteran players such as Marc Staal or Chris Kreider to lean on. Defense is also a bit of a question mark when considering how the team gives up large amounts of shots. They did improve during the season, but I don’t think their defense is as good as Carolina’s.
New York wins this series if their goaltending is stellar and if their 7th overall powerplay can be effective.
Carolina Hurricanes Vs New York Rangers NHL Playoffs 2020 Series Prediction
The New York Rangers win this series in 5 games. Historically, the Rangers are 34-6 against the Hurricanes since the 2011-2012 season, including a 4 game sweep of their season series this year. Having said this, I think the success the Rangers have had against the Canes will continue. Panarin and Zibanejad will lead the charge for the Rangers offensively and Igor Shesterkin will be heavily relied on to steal a game or two.
