Oakland A’s Vs Minnesota Twins Game Day Preview

Matt Chapman – (Oakland A’s)

In game 2 of a three game set between two American League teams. Both of them started out slow, but Oakland finally got it going. While Minnesota has been struggling all year round. Minnesota is sitting in last place going into the series. Oakland after the slow start is sitting in first place in the American League West. Still a long season to go since it is only May.

Oakland A’s

After starting out the season 0-6 everyone believed it was going to be a different type of season for Oakland , but after that slow start the A’s are in first place in the AL West.

It is not like the A’s are over powering opponents with pitching or hitting. They are in the middle the pack in runs and in era. Scoring 4.1 runs per game for 18th in the league, while having a team era of 4.02 for 16th in the league. They are doing enough to win.

Offensively Oakland is being led by old friend Jed Lowrie with a 266 batting average, While Matt Olsen is leading the team with eight homers. It’s a team approach for this team where everyone chips in and does enough to win.

Pitching they aren’t being led by one ace like most great teams have. Oakland has three starting pitchers that are pitching above average. Chris Bassitt, Cole Irvin and Sean Manaea all have an era below 3.50 or better. Thats what you need to win ball games pitching at a good rate.

Jed Lowrie on A’s Performances, “Just keep winning series, especially on the road.”

What an awful start to the season for the Twins. Going into he series with the A’s they were 11 games below .500. That is a brutal hole to climb out of. This bad start is coming from not having enough good pitching, based off of the numbers.

Minnesota’s pitching is bad all around era, batting average, runs allowed, etc. Their team era is 4.63 for 25th in the league, opponents batting average is .249 for 23rd in the league and the runs allowed per game is 5.1 per game for 26th in the league.

For the Twins to be better and get going the pitching needs to be better and much better because the offense is doing their part. Top half in the league in runs scored you should be winning games, a lot of them.

Twins are being led by Nelson Cruz who is hitting 303 with 9 homers and 22 RBI, while breakout star Byron Buxton is having a career year, but is on the IL with an injury. Buxton is hitting .370 with 9 homers and 17 RBI. Becoming the star everyone thought he would be.

Manager Rocco Baldelli on his team, “We have to look within and focus on bettering ourselves and getting where we need to be before we start worrying about the opposition or anything along those lines.”
