It’s pretty staggering to know that the last 10 NBA Finals were played with either Stephen Curry and/or LeBron James on the court. While James has played on the biggest stage for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers, Curry has done it each time for the Golden State Warriors. Even casual NBA fans know Curry and James. They, in a very real way, transcend the game. That fact alone makes any matchup between these two future Hall of Fame players much watch TV.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are a bit banged up. But, at this point in the NBA season that it generally true for every team. Losing Anthony Davis for any length of time however qualifiers as a bigger hit than say, losing Jared Dudley. Both Davis and Dudley will be out against the Warriors joining Marc Gasol. Davis continues to be on the mend after an Achilles issue, Dudley suffered a torn right MCL and Gasol is out due to Health and Safety protocols. The Lakers are only 4-7 in their last 11 games including a rough 4 game losing streak.
Despite the injuries the Lakers still hold the #3 spot in the Western Conference. They are coming off a win against a motivated Indiana Pacers team. In that game they were led by Kyle Kuzma with 24 points and 13 rebounds. It was the kind of performance the Lakers expect from Kuzma. It is also the type of performance Kuzma has rarely duplicated in back to back games. Will tonight be a repeat of dominate Kuzma or a return to inconsistent Kuzma?
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors have been streaky lately. Starting from February 15th they won two games, lost two, won three, then lost four. They will match up against the Lakers tonight coming off a victory against the Utah Jazz. That is the Western Conference leading Utah Jazz. Victories like that tend to motivate a team. Following that up with a win over the Lakers would be huge for the Warriors. Tonight marks the end of a short homestand for the Warriors.
Like the Lakers, the Warriors are banged up. Klay Thompson remains out this season. He did recently speak to reporters and shared his goal to be ready for the 2021-22 season. If he can make that goal, and as a fan of the game – I hope he does, it will give the Warriors one last run with their best team ever. Without Thompson Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Oubre Jr and rookie James Wiseman have all been playing well, albeit a bit inconsistently. Tonight, they will all have to show up and play well to beat the defending champions.
