It’s only been two days since the last time these teams played, with the Clippers winning 109-99. L.A. was without center Serge Ibaka, who remains day-to-day with a back issue. Clippers guard Patrick Beverley is expected to be out for Wednesday’s game as well. Dallas looks to be without PF James Johnson and C Dwight Powell is questionable. Overall, considering where we are in the season, both teams come into this game relatively healthy.

The Clippers scored a strong defensive victory on Monday night on the strength of Ivica Zubac’s 11 rebounds and Kawhi Leonard’s four steals. Starting with a blowout loss to the Pelicans, this will be their third game in four days on a dense southern road trip against two talented teams.
The Clippers have struggled to win of late, having lost six of their last ten games. One of the stronger defensive teams in the NBA (109.7ppg allowed), they have allowed more than 115 points in five games during this stretch. Yet, they still hold a comfortable grip on the West’s fourth playoff seed.
Moreover their offensive production has dropped as well. Team ppg has dropped to 113.9 from 117.5 over the previous ten games. Kawhi Leonard’s points-per-game average over the last 10 has dropped over the previous ten from 29 to 25ppg. The scoring drop coincides with the returning presence of the Clippers’ other leading scorer, shooting guard Paul George. George’s scoring since his return has also slipped from 23ppg to 20 since his return on Feb 19th. If the Clippers want to find their way out of the muck and contend for the conference, they need to get their two big playmakers scoring more points.
Dallas Mavericks
If the playoffs started right now, the Mavericks would capture the eighth seed in the Western Conference and face the Jazz. Despite the Jazz slipping a bit lately, this is still no enviable position for the Mavericks. The good news is that they’re only a game behind San Antonio for the seventh spot. The flip side is that they’re also only a game ahead of the Warriors to keep their position.
The Mavs loss to the Clippers on Monday yielded big production from their main cast: Luka Dončić (25pts, 16ast, 10reb), Kristaps Porziņģis (22pts, 7reb), and Tim Hardaway (21pts) all played up to standards. What they also got was practically nothing from anyone else. There were no other Mavericks who finished in double digits in any category, and added no significant defensive stats. If the Mavericks wish to put together a run and move up the Western Conference ladder, they need to be getting more help from the rest of their supporting cast.
The Mavericks, despite their Monday loss to the Clippers, have played very well of late. They have won seven out of their last 10 games, moving into the western playoff fray behind the MVP-caliber play of Dončić. They have a difficult road trip ahead, including two in a row in Portland, so they need to come away with a win against the Clippers tonight to keep their train rolling. That’s going to depend on ball movement and keeping it away from Kawhi Leonard.
