Boston is nearing the end of their 5 game road trip and Utah is back home after a quick 3 game road trip. The Jazz are at the top of the West and the entire NBA at 19-5 on the season and the Celtics are still trying to find their identity. Both teams are in the top 10 in defensive and offensive rating, so this matchup could end up being a great game. A thing to watch for in this game is the big man battle between Tristan Thompson and Rudy Gobert.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics are currently 2-2 on their 5 game road trip and are coming off an ugly loss against the Phoenix Suns. The biggest story for this game will be if Jaylen Brown can play or not. If he is active, he will be a huge boost for this team defensively and especially offensively. If he is inactive, this will be a very tough game for the Celtics. A key player to keep an eye on for the game is Kemba Walker. He has not been the Kemba that we have all grown accustomed to seeing and he is coming off a 4-20 shooting night. If Jaylen is inactive, they will need Kemba to step up if they have any chance at winning.
Jayson Tatum is the Celtics leading scorer this year and is averaging 27 points and is shooting 41% from 3. He will give the Celtics 20+ almost every single night, but if Boston has any chance to top off the NBA leading Jazz, he is going to need help from everyone else. If the Celtics can contain Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley, I like their chances.
Utah Jazz
Utah is shocking a lot of people this year and are playing amazing basketball right now. They are currently 4th in offensive rating, 3rd in defensive rating, and 2nd in net rating. That is phenomenal. Jordan Clarkson is a candidate for 6th man of the year right now and he is playing great. He is averaging 17.5 PPG on 46% shooting and provides a big spark off the bench for this Jazz team. Mike Conley, after struggling last year, is finally starting to find his groove for this Jazz team and it is one of the main reasons why they are where they are.
Rudy Gobert is still doing Rudy Gobert things. He alters shots around the rim and is one of the best shot blockers in the entire NBA. Donovan Mitchell is having a “down year” and even in his “down year” he is still putting up 23.5 PPG and a career high 4.9 APG. Those two superstars alone make this Jazz team good, but when players like Royce O’Neale (44%), Joe Ingles (42%), and Bojan Bogdanovic (42.1%) are knocking down the open 3’s consistently, this Jazz team is amongst the NBA’s elite.
