The Phoenix Suns host the Boston Celtics for the first time this season. Both teams are coming off of wins from Friday night. The Celtics won in Los Angeles against the Clippers, and the Suns beat the Pistons at home.

Boston Celtics

After Friday night’s win, the Celtics solidified their position in the number 4 spot in the Eastern Conference standings; they look to climb the list on Sunday.

Daniel Theis (knee) is questionable for Sunday, but Jaylen Brown (knee), Romeo Langford (wrist), and Marcus Smart (calf) will be out.

Jaylen Brown is a heavy loss for Boston because he averaged over 27 points in his last seven games. Without Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart, the Celtics only players that average more than 10 points per game are Jayson Tatum and Kemba Walker. The rest of the team will need to step up offensively if the Celtics are to prevail.

The Celtics’ perimeter defense looked good on Friday against the Clippers. It will be important on Sunday when they play Devin Booker and Chris Paul. However, Booker and Paul are not Phoenix’s only threats on offense.

Boston will need to play big on defense against Deandre Ayton because he averages almost 14 points per game. This will prove to be difficult if Theis doesn’t play or is limited. Without Theis, Boston’s centers average just 25.8 minutes per game while Ayton averages 31.9.

This young Suns team looks to continue proving themselves as a playoff team for the first time since 2010.

The Suns will be keeping their eyes on a few injuries for Sunday. Abdel Nader (ankle) is probable, but Jae Crowder (foot) is doubtful. Also, Dario Saric (ankle) and Cameron Payne (foot) are both out for the game on Sunday.

Devin Booker leads the Suns in minutes per game and points per game. Also, he averaged 31 minutes and 24 points since returning from a hamstring injury a week ago.

In his last five games, Phoenix’s 6’10” center, Deandre Ayton is averaging more than 14 rebounds per game. If Daniel Theis does not play, Ayton has an opportunity to expose one of Boston’s weaknesses. Boston’s other centers, Robert Williams and Tacko Fall, combine to average just 9.6 rebounds per game.
