2018 Bruins Draft – Don Sweeney Trying To Get Back Into First Round
The 2018 NHL – Bruins Entry Draft will be held Friday and Saturday from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Following that, the free agency period will be opening on July 1.
The Boston Bruins are in position to be very active over the next couple of weeks.
While they currently do not have a first-round pick in the draft due to the Rick Nash trade, rumor has it B’s general manager Don Sweeney has been trying to get back into the first round. Boston has a couple of big-time assets it can dangle such as Torey Krug and David Krejci, but it remains to be seen how other teams value them.
2018 Bruins Draft Outlook
Here is the outlook for the 2018 Bruins Draft. Of course this is assuming they don’t make any moves involving picks leading up to the draft:
2nd round pick – 57th overall
3rd round pick – 77th overall
4th round pick – 119th overall
6th round pick – 181st overall
7th round pick – 212 overall
Even though a lot of now former prospects are making names for themselves for the big club such as Jake DeBrusk, Ryan Donato, Matt Gryzelcyk, Danton Heinen, Charlie McAvoy and others, there are still a dearth of players in the B’s system to be excited about. That being said, we would like to see the Bruins address the goaltending position.
Boston Bruins Goaltending Need – 2018 Draft
Boston doesn’t have anyone in the minors they would feel comfortable using as Tuukka Rask’s backup just yet, and they certainly do not have anyone they view as a goalie of the future. Zane McIntyre has been inconsistent in the minors and hasn’t performed well at the NHL level, Daniel Vladar is only a year into his pro career and Jeremy Swayman is still at the University of Maine.
Obviously if the Black & Gold do draft a goalie, he won’t be ready to play in the NHL yet either. But knowing there are more than just a couple options in the pipeline would be reassuring, as you can never have enough goaltending.
Also factor in that the club will need to re-sign Anton Khudobin, who has played himself into a raise, and the need for a reliable goalie outside of Rask becomes greater. The Bruins have other areas of the team that they need to address and should not be investing a ton of money into a backup goalie.
