WWE Smackdown 5/15 Show Preview

It’s the first Smackdown after the Money In The Bank(MITB) pay per view and it’s sure to be a good one. Smackdown superstar Otis won the men’s MITB match in one of the most shocking wins in MITB history and while that should be the biggest news of the week for Smackdown, it is not. Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn was stripped of the title due to not competing due to the coronavirus pandemic. Due to those circumstances, a tournament will be held to crown a new champion and that tournament starts this week on Smackdown.

Intercontinental Championship Tournament

The last time we saw Sami Zayn was at Wrestlemania when he successfully defended the Intercontinental Championship against Daniel Bryan. There has been speculation that Zayn has not been on television due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While he does not have the virus, he does not want to risk the danger of being infected with it. With Zayn out, WWE stripped him of the title and a tournament will be held to crown a champion.

The participants for the tournament have not been revealed but Smackdown has options to fill the void Zayn leaves behind. Shinsuke Nakamura, The Miz, John Morrison, Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Dolph Ziggler are just some the names on the blue brand who have held the IC Title before that could be the next champion. Emerging superstars like Otis would also be a great choice for next IC Champion. While Smackdown doesn’t have many credible Universal Title challengers, they are stacked with mid-card title contenders.

Will The Fiend Target Braun Strowman?

Braun Strowman defeated Bray Wyatt at MITB to retain his Universal Championship. At one point in that match, it looked as though Strowman would rejoin his former master but it was all just a ploy to lower Wyatt’s guard. This allowed Strowman to powerslam Wyatt and win the match. But this feud seems far from over as Wyatt’s alter ego, The Fiend, has yet to make an appearance. The Fiend is arguably the most popular character in all of professional wrestling so if Strowman is going to remain the alpha male on Smackdown, he will have to defeat him.

Strowman beating the Fiend does not look likely. After a questionable decision of having the Fiend lose to Goldberg in early March, WWE has made every effort to make him strong again. That was shown when the Fiend defeated John Cena in the highly regarded Firefly Fun House match at Wrestlemania. There’s so much more money to be made for WWE with Wyatt/Fiend as the top star on Smackdown so if Strowman does indeed face the Fiend, it is likely he will lose the title. But until that match is officially made, this is all just speculation. I’m sure we will find out more in the coming weeks on Smackdown.
