WWE Smackdown 6/19 Show Preview
Although no matches have been promoted, Smackdown this week is looking to be very newsworthy. On last week’s show, AJ Styles defeated Daniel Bryan to become the new Intercontinental Champion. The match was over 40 minutes and has been the greatest Smackdown match of the quarantine era. AJ Styles will have a coronation ceremony on Friday night.
This will be the first Smackdown after the Backlash event. On the blue brand side of things, Braun Strowman, Sheamus, Bayley, and Sasha Banks were all winners in their respective matches at the pay per view. The other big story heading into Smackdown is the return of Bray Wyatt and the Firefly Fun House. Wyatt has not been seen since the Money In The Bank show. Also on this night, former NXT superstar, Matt Riddle, will make his highly anticipated debut.
AJ Styles Intercontinental Championship Celebration
When AJ Styles was traded from Raw to Smackdown last month, Smackdown gained perhaps the best wrestler in the WWE today. Styles has quickly backed up that statement by winning the Intercontinental Championship and is already making that title look like a bigger deal than the main championship on the blue brand, the Universal Championship. Besides Bray Wyatt, AJ Styles is the biggest star on Smackdown so most shows will revolve around him. That is why he is getting the rare championship coronation ceremony this week.
With all this buzz around him, Styles can potentially elevate the IC Championship to a level it hasn’t seen in years. From its debut in 1979 to the mid-2000s, the Intercontinental Championship was treated as the number two title in the company. Whoever held the title was usually the heir apparent to the main championship. But in recent years, it has been relegated to an afterthought with low-mid card feuds surrounding it. That needs to change.
But for AJ to elevate the title, he is going to need good “dance” partners. It is likely that at some point during the coronation ceremony, Styles’ next opponent will be revealed. Smackdown is full of good babyface challengers for Styles including Otis, Jeff Hardy, Kofi Kingston, Big E, Daniel Bryan, and the debuting Matt Riddle. No matter who is next for Styles, all eyes will be on him and his path towards redeeming the Intercontinental Championship.
The Firefly Fun House Returns!
The most popular superstar in all of WWE returns to Smackdown this week. And he is bringing his “friends” with him. Bray Wyatt is back with a new edition of the Firefly Fun House. Wyatt has not been seen since he lost to Braun Strowman at the Money In The Bank event last month and fans have been clamoring for his return. Since debuting his new character in April of 2019, Bray Wyatt has consistently been the most entertaining character in WWE so when he is missing, it is easily noticed.
The new episode of Firefly Fun House will give us some insight on Wyatt’s next move. His feud with Strowman over the Universal Championship did not seem over after Wyatt’s loss so that seems like the likely direction. Wyatt’s alter ego, The Fiend, versus Strowman for the title is too good for the WWE to pass up and with Strowman treading water as champion, it seems like a good time for Wyatt to get the Universal Championship back.
