Washington Capitals Vs Pittsburgh Penguins Game Day Preview
It was a slow start to the 2021 campaign for the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, they finally got a taste of victory on Sunday by defeating the Washington Capitals.
It was a bitter pill for the Caps as it was their 1st loss of the season in overtime to tested rival.
The teams will meet again tonight in a rematch!
Washington Capitals
In their 1st loss of the season, the Washington Capitals did get a point in the standing as the defeat did come in an overtime shootout. Coming into tonight’s game some players felt as if they have not played a full game that meets the clubs standards.
“Some periods are better than others,” Washington center Nicklas Backstrom said. “I think we’ve got to find that consistency a little better and make sure we’re playing 60 minutes.”
Washington had an optional practice with a dozen players on the ice Monday in Pittsburgh, continuing its streak of not holding a full practice since the season started.
“I’m managing the (condensed) schedule,” Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said.
Pittsburgh Penguins
“It always feels good to win, especially when you lose two early (games),” Pittsburgh winger Jake Guentzel said.
Winning cures all pain but the Penguins are still giving up way to many goals. Yesterday’s practice gave goaltender Tristan Jarry a chance to work on his game. Jarry, in his first season as the undisputed No. 1, has given up nine goals in less than four periods and got pulled in Pittsburgh’s second game. Backup goalie Casey DeSmith will make his second start and third straight appearance today.
Coach Mike Sullivan said that while he still has confidence in Jarry, he would like for Jarry “to reset his mindset, get a couple workouts with (goaltending coach Mike Buckley). … That will be good for Tristan.”
