The Utah Jazz face off against the New Orleans Pelicans in the first game of NBA regular season basketball since March. NBA fans everywhere are excited that basketball is finally back and it starts with a big game with big ramifications. While the Jazz are sitting pretty with their playoff ranking, the Pelicans are still fighting for a chance at being the 8 seed.

Utah Jazz

Before the NBA season was shut down on March 11th, the Utah Jazz were one of the hottest teams in basketball, winning 4 of their last 5. But then the carelessness of Jazz center, Rudy Robert, was the tipping point of putting all of sports on hiatus due the COVID-19 pandemic. Gobert did not take the virus seriously and routinely mocked it. So of course he was the first major pro athlete to contract the coronavirus. And then he spread it to to star teammate, Donovan Mitchell. This led to the NBA shutting down the league for 4 months and a lot of animosity between Gobert and Mitchell.

Many are wondering how these two will play together after these events. The Jazz need these two to be on the same page if they are going to make a run at the championship. Mitchell was averaging 24.2 points a game when the season was halted so hopefully the Jazz can continue to get that kind of production after the long layoff.

New Orleans Pelicans

The NBA should just be honest with everyone and just say they didn’t just go right to the playoffs after the layoff is because they want superstar rookie, Zion Williamson, to still have a chance at making the playoffs. Zion’s Pelicans are current 3.5 games out of the 8th seed in the Western Conference with 8 games to go. The NBA knows that Zion being in the playoffs, in a potential match-up with Lebron James, is huge for ratings. So they are doing everything in their power to get him there and players in the league know it.

But for the Pelicans to make the playoffs, it looks like they could only afford 1 loss during these 8 games and that won’t be easy. To pull off a miracle run, they need Brandon Ingram to continue to put up big numbers. Ingram is averaging 24.3 points in the 2019/2020 season. New Orleans also needs Zion to become the superstar everyone believes he is for this critical stretch to the finish.
