This Week In Wrestling

Crowds are FINALLY back in the wrestling world! WWE used the method AEW has been using for weeks now and implemented a crowd featuring its lower level wrestlers. While it may not be a fan-based crowd, the wrestler-based audience made Raw, NXT, and Smackdown better shows. It’s the first step in eventually getting the REAL fans back at shows.

It was another big week in wrestling as AEW held its Double or Nothing pay per view on May 23. It was a great event that featured the much talked about Stadium Stampede Match. AEW continued its hot streak by following up with HUGE edition of Dynamite on Wednesday. On the WWE side, Raw, NXT, and Smackdown followed up on some major story-lines as they approach TWO big shows in June.

All Elite Wrestling Double Or Nothing – Saturday May 23, 2020

As predicted, Double Or Nothing was a very exciting show that did not disappoint. New champions were crowned as Cody became the first ever TNT Champion and Hikaru Shida defeated Nyla Rose to become the AEW Women’s Champion. AEW World Champion, Jon Moxley, overcame a bloody war with Brodie Lee to retain his title.

But the two biggest matches of the night book-ended the Double Or Nothing pay per view. The opening match of the night was the Casino Ladder Match. The winner or the match would be rewarded with AEW World Championship match at a later date. The debuting Brian Cage absolutely dominated this match after he was the last man to enter. The combined forces of the 8 other competitors could not stop him and after annihilating the last man satanding, Darby Allin, Cage won the match. He will now face Jon Moxley at Fyter Fest in a match everyone in the wrestling world is looking forward to.

The main event of the night was the much anticipated Stadium Stampede match between the Inner Circle and the Elite. There are not enough words to describe how insane and fun this match was. It was more than just a wrestling match. All I can say is if you haven’t seen it yet, stop what you are doing and go watch it NOW. It’s that good. The Elite won this match after dispatching each Inner Circle member in very creative ways.

WWE Raw – Monday May 25, 2020

Raw featured a very good triple threat match to determine the number one contender for the Raw Women’s Championship. Nia Jax beat Natalya and Charlotte and will now go on to face Asuka for the title at Backlash in June. Asuka and Jax have been feuding for weeks so this match makes the most sense. One thing to note is that although Nia Jax has always been a dominating force in WWE, she has never beaten Asuka in a one on one match,

WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and Lashley brawled to the end Monday Night Raw this week. The two will battle for the WWE Championship at Backlash but did not want to wait til then to get their hands on each other. Since aligning with MVP, Lashley is finally becoming the star fans thought he would be when he returned to WWE two years ago. The match between these two at Backlash should main event the show if this story keeps exceeding expectations.

All Elite Wrestling Dynamite – Wednesday May 27, 2020

Dynamite had two MAJOR stories coming out of the show that could take the company to new heights. During the Inner Circle Pep Rally, Chris Jericho made it known that he wants a piece of Mike Tyson. Jericho has not gotten over Tyson punching him ten years ago on WWE television and now that Tyson has been making appearances with AEW, Jericho wants a shot at him. Tyson, flanked by his entourage of some very famous fighters answered Jericho’s call and a brawl broke out. It took almost the entire locker room to pull these groups apart as Dynamite went off the air.

This angle got major publicity as it was featured on many entertainment and sports websites. The other angle that got major buzz was the debut of the team formerly known The Revival. Now known as FTR, the two men stopped an attack on the Young Bucks. FTR recently quit the WWE after being underutilized and have made it known for months they wanted to be in All Elite Wrestling.

These two angles are HUGE for AEW. FTR is one of the best tag teams on the planet. Fans have wanted the dream match between FTR and the Young Bucks to happen for years and now they are going to get it. That match alone could sell tens of thousands of pay per views for AEW. Jericho versus Tyson is THE angle that could put AEW in the conversation with WWE as best wrestling company in the world. With all the publicity that match would get, it could ignite a war not seen in the wrestling world since the late 90s.

WWE Smackdown – Friday, May 29, 2020

Smackdown was not the wrestling show fans expected on Friday. The show started with an incident outside of the WWE Performance Center. Elias was found unconscious after apparently being hit by a car. The car was registered to Jeff Hardy and he was found knocked out not too far away from the scene. Hardy was then “arrested” as he wreaked of the same alcohol found in the car. With Hardy and Elias out of action, the two advertised Intercontinental Championship semi-final matches were canceled.

While AJ Styles took the easy way to the finals and decided not to compete, Daniel Bryan said he still wanted to earn his way to the championship. A battle royal was held to determine Hardy’s replacement and it was won by Sheamus. Bryan and Sheamus faced off in the main event of Smackdown in a back and forth contest. After being distracted by a returning Hardy, Sheamus lost to Bryan. The finals are now set and it will be Daniel Bryan versus AJ Styles for the Intercontinental Championship.

Expect Sheamus to be revealed as the mastermind behind the events that started Smackdown. He has been feuding with Hardy recently and is still upset after losing to Hardy last week. A match between the two will makes sense for Backlash with the winner maybe being next in line for a shot at the IC Title.
