New York States Failed Sports Gaming Fireworks!

For the 43rd time, Macy’s hosted its annual 4th of July Fireworks show in New York.  This year the skyline was lit up from the Brooklyn Bridge and four barges along the lower East River.  It’s a shame how Albany, NY Capital, refuses to light up the economy by not passing a true sports gambling bill.

Sports gambling will be in place in select Upstate, New York casinos in time for the upcoming NFL 2019 season.  Momentum on the issue is building up, but let’s be honest with ourselves.  Most of the the state’s population lives downstate.  The city of NY is a global juggernaut while Long Island is populated with about 2.8 MM residents (Census 2010).  The likelihood of these residents traveling upstate to place sports bets are slim.  Viable options exist right across the river in New Jersey giving the Garden State an opportunity to capture revenue that could remain in New York.

New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo & Assemblyman Gary Pretlow championed a bill that would have permitted Upstate casinos to offer statewide NY mobile sports wagering and partner with racetracks, off-track betting parlors and professional sports facilities.  According to Assemblyman Pretlow the bill has the votes to pass, but State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie will not put the bill on the floor.  Governor Andrew Cuomo is not a supporter and would veto such bill.

Is the approach of Heastie fair?  “To me, the whole ideology not to pass in the Assembly was wrong,” Addabbo said. “Is it our job to put bills to the floor only that the governor will sign? That’s not the role of the legislature.  You pass it and let the governor make a decision.”  The added benefit of putting the bill on the governor’s desk, according to Addabbo, would be to make him explain the veto. If Cuomo stated the veto was because mobile sports wagering needs a constitutional amendment, then the legislature would address.
