New York Mets vs Boston Red Sox Series Preview

The New York Mets and Boston Red Sox both had rough starts to their 2020 seasons. The two teams both finished the weekend 1-2 after winning the first game of their respective series. While Red Sox hit the ball well, their pitching staff proved to be their weakness. In regards to the Mets, they just just did not play overall good baseball.

The weakness of the Mets last year was their bullpen and it was the bullpen this weekend that hurt them again. Edwin Diaz blew a save with 2 outs in the ninth against the Braves and the Mets would go on to lose that game in extra innings. Then on Sunday, the Mets gave up 14 runs in an absolute blowout by the Braves. In a shortened 60 game season, the Mets cannot afford the bullpen to display the horror it did last year.

Also, with perhaps the deepest lineup in the NL, the Mets need to hit. They scored a total of 5 runs this weekend when most teams in the MLB scored at least 5 runs in one of their first 3 games. I think a trip to hitter friendly Fenway Park should awaken the cold bats and we will see what this lineup can really do.

Fantasy Baseball

For the Red Sox to compete against the Yankees and Rays in the AL East this year, they are going to have to out-slug all of their opponents. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the Red Sox have one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball. They are missing their ace, Chris Sale, for the entire season due to Tommy John surgery and their other star pitcher, David Price, was traded away to the Dodgers in the Mookie Betts blockbuster deal.

With a lineup including JD Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, and Rafael Devers, this team will score runs. But I don’t think they will be able to match the other heavy hitters of the AL. The Sox play two playoff contender opponents in the Mets and Yankees this week so we should have a good look at how this season will play out for them.
