Denver Nuggets vs. Utah Jazz Game Day Preview

Denver Nuggets vs. Utah Jazz

Both the Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz are teams that are sitting in the playoff shadow of the teams playing in Los Angeles. But both are playing good basketball and should not be dismissed as playoff threats come April.

Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets started out the season fairly strong but of late, they have been on a bit of a roller coaster ride. Since the beginning of January, they have beaten and lost to the Rockets and beat the Mavericks and Clippers. But they’ve also lost games to teams that should be easy wins for them like the Wizards and Cavaliers. This could be an indication that they’re playing up or down to their opponents or the injury bug to some of their main starters has come around to bite them.

Denver is 28th in possessions per game and 23rd in fast-break points per game. The comparatively slow pace of their game means that they have to make the most of every single possession in order to have a chance at winning this game.

They are also 28th in the league in the percentage of their shots that come from three-point range. With Jamal Murray out indefinitely with an ankle injury, expect the number of three-point shots taken to be even lower. With Paul Milsap and Jason Plumlee also out indefinitely, Nikola Jokic will have to have a stellar performance to walk away with a win in this matchup.

Jazz

Like the Nuggets, the Jazz do not have a particularly quick pace of play. Utah is only two spots ahead of the Nuggets in possessions per game at 26th, so this will not be a game the Jazz likely win by simply outrunning the Nuggets.

The Jazz both take and make considerably more three-point shots per game than the Nuggets. They are 16th in threes attempted but 6th in threes made per game. So, while they’re taking fewer threes than half of the league, they’re sinking more than the majority of teams. With Nikola Jokic playing in the post, the three-ball will be an important factor if the Jazz are going to win this game.
