Red Wings 

The Red Wings sit dead last in the league overall, currently riding a three-game losing streak. They have won just two of their last 10 games, and have a league worst -90 goal differential. Both Andreas Athanasiou and Jonathan Bernier are expected to miss the game, both nursing injuries. Filip Zadina, Givani Smith and Dennis Cholowski have been recalled from Grand Rapids in the AHL and are expected to play, as is Frans Nielsen, who missed Detroit’s last game before the All-Star break. Tyler Burtuzzi is returning from the All-Star festivities in St. Louis. 

Rangers

The Rangers have lost far too much ground in the playoff race, as they now sit 11 points out of the last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. They are riding a 2 game losing streak, and are 4-6-0 in their last 10. If they have any fighting chance of getting back into the playoff race, they need to get started on the right foot, which could be jump started by a win over the last place Red Wings. 

With the trade deadline approaching, goaltender Alexander Georgiev has garnered plenty of interest in recent weeks. That situation is complicated by the fact that Igor Shesterkin has been recalled from the AHL. At this point in the season, it appears that the Rangers are showcasing some of their talent for trade bait. Along with Georgiev, that also includes Chris Kreider. Kreider will either be traded or extended. Either way, more attention will be paid to the left-winger in the coming weeks.
