DC Defenders

The DC Defenders beat the visiting Seattle Dragons 31-19 in their season opener, covering the seven-point spread. The Defenders looked so dominate in their XFL week one matchup that they have been given the best odds to now win the XFL Championship. 2015 Ohio State national championship QB, Cardale Jones, posted a league-best 116.7 passing rating in their victory over the Dragons. Going 16-26 for 235 yards, Jones threw two touchdowns with no interceptions, as well as claimed 28 rushing yards on nine attempts. It appears Jones’ ability to lead a championship contending football team is not just in the past.

While Jones held the best passer rating in the XFL, Guardians QB Matt McGloin – formerly of the Oakland Raiders – barely completed 50% of his passes, going 15-29. The Defenders had two interceptions against the Dragons, including a pick-six by Bradley Sylve. This defensive pressure might force McGloin to make mistakes that the Defenders need for another win. The Defenders offense also boasts two of the best play-makers in RB Jhurell Pressley and WR Eli Rogers. Combine this with Jones’ ability to use his legs and the Defenders should be on their way to continuing their undefeated record after Week 2 of the XFL.

New York Guardians

The New York Guardians opened up week one of the XFL by defeating the Tampa Bay Vipers 23-3 as home underdogs at MetLife Stadium. Although his completion rate was questionable, Guardians QB Matt McGloin threw for 182 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. However, New York was significantly out-gained in its victory. The Guardians earned 226 yards of offense while the Vipers boasted 394 total yards. The key to victory for the Guardian was by keeping the Vipers out of the end zone and forcing two turnovers.

The biggest play of the game against the Vipers was Guardians Austin Duke returning a 59-yard kick to start the game, which was the best return all weekend. The top performance by the New York offense was RB Darius Victor’s 32 rushing yards on nine carries, who can be expected to be utilized in their game this week. Unfortunately for the Guardians however, Tampa Bay moved the ball much easier against New York than the final score indicates. With only one week of XFL in the books, it is hard to tell much but the New York Guardians have an opportunity to prove their victory over the Vipers was more than a fluke against presumably the best team in the XFL this week.
