Colorado Avalanche Vs St. Louis Blues Game Day Preview

Ryan O’Reilly – (St. Louis Blues)

A battle between West division foes, the division leading Avalanche take on the playoff spot battling Blues. Avalanche are one of the few teams that believe are cup contenders. Ever since winning the cup a couple years back, the Blues have struggled to be one of the top teams everyone thought they would be. They’ve been a borderline playoff team ever since winning the cup. Also, losing captain Alex Pietrangelo to Vegas Golden Knights in free agency. With 15 games left in the regular season, these games down the stretch are huge for the Blues to get into the playoffs.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avs are one of the highest scoring offenses in the NHL in the last couple. of seasons. Leading the NHL with 3.57 goals per game.

They have been always good on offense, but with adding Cale Makar last year as one of the best rookie defensemen and trading for goalie Philipp Grubauer. Colorado is second in NHL with 2.31 goals allowed per game.

Colorado is led by Nathan Mackinnon with 52 points, Mikko Rantanen with 25 goals on the season. When they are together on the ice it is hard to stop no matter defense you put out there.

One of the best under the radar was Devon Toews, trade from New York Islanders for two second round picks, than signing him to a four year extension. Toews and Makar lead the defensemen with 24 minutes of time on ice per night.

Jared Bednar on his forward group “The forward group is about to get competitive for ice team, and I’m not going to play guys based on how they. performed two years ago or even two months ago.”

As the trade deadline came and went on Monday afternoon, the Blues didn’t make a move to buy or sell. Everyone thought they would sell, but after winning three straight to get back into a playoff spot the Blues are going for it with this group.

The big trade chip that was available for St. Louis was Mike Hoffman, on an expiring deal a pending UFA. Hoffman is having a down year, compared to his high goal scoring. numbers in Florida.

The Blues are led by David Perron with 40 points, but are led in goals by Ryan O’Reilly with 17. Blues offense is in the middle of the pack in scoring, that is why this is where they are in the standings.

St. Louis is led on the back-end by goalie Jordan Binnington. Binnington is 12-11-5 with a 2.65 goals against average and .910 save percentage. He is having a good year, but not where he was when he took them to Stanley cup finals win.

Doug Armstrong on not making a trade, “It had our minds going in different directions. Certainly, the play of the last three games and being in a playoff spot today was a reflection of really deciding to stand pat with this group.”
