Brooklyn Nets vs. Philadelphia 76ers Game Day Preview
Basketball returns from the NBA All Star Break with a matchup between two potential Eastern Conference playoff teams. The Brooklyn Nets travel to Philadelphia to battle the 76ers. This is the 4th matchup between these teams this year with the Sixers leading the series 2-1. Both teams are not where they want to be and are looking to come back from the break with a big win in the national spotlight.

Coming into this season, The Brooklyn Nets had high hopes. They had a huge offseason by signing Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. While they knew Durant would be out for the season recovering from ACL surgery, they thought star point guard Kyrie Irving would be on the court, taking them to the playoffs for the second consecutive year. While the Nets will likely make the playoffs in the weaker Eastern Conference, Irving has had trouble staying on the court. And that trend will continue going forward as Irving is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury that has had miss a load of games already this year.
Believe it or not, The Nets have actually played better with Irving out of the lineup. The best player for the Nets this year has been Spencer Dinwiddie. He has averaged 21 points while also dishing out over 6.5 assists a game. The Nets also average more points a game than the Sixers(110 to 108) but with the Sixers having one of the best defenses in the league, it will be hard for Nets to get past them. Last time these two teams met in Philly, the Sixers won 117-106.
The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the most intriguing stories in the NBA this year. They came into the season as favorites to win the Eastern Conference but have yet to live up to their championship potential as they currently sit in 5th place in the Eastern Conference. The reason they are not higher in the standings is because their terrible road record. While they play terrible on the road, they have the best home record in the NBA at 25-2. While playing at home, the Sixers play as though they are the most elite team in basketball.
Although the Sixers have not been consistent, All Star point guard Ben Simmons has been everything and more. Since the beginning of 2020, Simmons has been averaging over 20 points a game. He also has had 10 assists in each of his last 3 games. With the Sixers healthy and acquiring a couple of shooters at the trade deadline, that assist stat will most likely continue. On the other hand, All Star center Joel Embiid has had trouble being consistent since returning from injury. He’s scored over 20 points in 5 out of the 8 games since being back but has struggled getting those baskets. He has looked sluggish and is not back at 100% yet. He may have trouble keeping up with the fast paced Nets so I expect the offense to revolve around Simmons as that has worked in the past against fast paced teams.
